British Waterways needs you to track water-loving wildlife

Today (Friday 3 April), British Waterways – which cares for 2,200 miles of the nation’s canals and rivers - is inviting nature lovers of all ages to get out and about on their local waterway and record the bugs and beasties they spot there. A superb family activity, the 6th annual wildlife survey will continue throughout the year until October.

New canal brings prosperity to Liverpool

A brand new stretch of canal is today (Wednesday 25 March) being officially unveiled in Liverpool – two and a half centuries after the Duke of Bridgewater kick-started the ‘canal mania’ that would fuel the world’s first industrial revolution.

A £2 million dredging programme to improve the water quality of the River Lee Navigation near the Olympic Park in East London, will see up to 16,000m3 of silt removed from the waterway.

Bill Bryson backs campaign to clean up canals

Bill Bryson, best-selling author and President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) is urging the 11 million people who use the nation’s canals and rivers to tackle the problems of litter on their local waterway. Volunteers are needed to put on their boots and take part in British Waterways’ Towpath Tidy 2009 – locally coordinated activity days which will take place along targeted stretches of more than 2,000 miles of canals and rivers between Thursday 26th and Sunday 29th March 2009.

Price Review For 12 Month Mooring Permits

British Waterways (BW) has completed its annual pricing review for 12 month mooring permits to apply in England and Wales from April 2009. The review fulfils BW's statutory obligation to set market -led prices whilst ongoing analysis of vacancies and prices will ensure that BW is able to respond quickly to any effects that the unprecedented economic downturn may have on the moorings market during 2009/10.

‘Tenchsion’ mounts as British Waterways evicts big fish from small pond

British Waterways is anticipating to relocate more than a tonne of fish from a section of the Kennet & Avon Canal as part of a programme to improve conditions for aquatic wildlife, including dragonflies. The abnormally large number of fish, which have been left to flourish undisturbed for many years, will be removed from the side ponds of the famous Caen Hill lock flight – a ‘staircase’ of sixteen locks – near Devizes in Wiltshire.
