Government welcomes 3rd sector debate for waterways

The UK Government has today (7 December 2009) ended recent speculation about the sale of British Waterways’ property endowment in England and Wales by announcing its preferred approach to "consider alternative models for the business as a whole, such as mutual or third sector structures."
Dates announced for Towpath Tidy 2010

British Waterways announces that next year’s Towpath Tidy will be taking place from 1—14 March 2010. The annual spring clean brings environmental benefits to the nation’s canals and rivers and supports the year-round work carried out by British Waterways.
Licence it or lose it

Between 9 and 21 November British Waterways, which manages 2,200 miles of canals and rivers in the UK, will be using boats and taking to the towpaths on foot and bike as part of its annual National Boat Check. Staff from the canal organisation will be identifying those boaters who have not bought the required licence are therefore not contributing to the cost of maintaining the region’s waterways.
