Licence Evaders Beware - British Waterways Seeks Out Unlicensed Boats

Between now and 21 November, British Waterways, which manages 2,200 miles of canals and rivers across the UK, will be taking to the waterways on foot, bike and boat as part of its annual National Boat Check. Its enforcement teams will be identifying those boaters who are not contributing to the cost of maintaining and keeping the waterways as attractive places to visit.

British Waterways (BW) is today publishing plans for the future pricing and allocation of its long term moorings in England and Wales. Its decision takes account of responses to a public consultation, market research into a trial of allocating mooring vacancies by tender, BW’s experience of operating a tender process and Government policy for the management of the waterways.

Waterways To Strike A Blow Against Climate Change

British Waterways has today announced plans to generate renewable energy at canal and riverside locations across the UK. Working with Partnerships for Renewables, British Waterways is the first public corporation to explore opportunities for wind turbines and small-scale hydro power schemes. The proposals, which could provide annual savings in excess of 100,000 tonnes of CO2, would generate enough power for 45,000 homes – the equivalent to the canalside town of Blackburn.

Good Progress At The Stourbridge Canal Breach

Work is progressing well at the Stourbridge Canal breach site with a number of significant milestones reached this week. With both clay dams now built and water pumped from the River Stour into the majority of the canal (apart from the breach site), British Waterways has now been able to release all of the trapped boats back onto the network.
