About Us
The New Marinas Unit (NMU) has been established within British Waterways to provide expert advice to marina developers and ensure that they receive clear, consistent and timely responses from us as they progress their scheme through our Application Process.
We are a central team who works closely with our local business units to combine specialist and technical expertise with local knowledge and management. We are responsible for the information contained on this website.
Our team comprises:
Nigel Sheppard, General Manager
Nigel has been with BW for several years as a Waterway Manager and Service Manager where he gained experience in developing and managing marinas. Prior to this, he served with the armed forces and then had a career as Business Development Manager with various customer-facing organisations.
His role is to facilitate successful new marina developments across our network.
Jenny Whitehall, Process Manager
Jenny has worked for BW for many years in a business support role within a professional technical and commercial environment. Her experience includes project management, financial and business planning and facilities management. She has been responsible for the setting up of business processes for a variety of BW Departments, the most recent being the Northern Property Development team.
Her role is to develop and maintain robust business processes for the NMU and local waterway offices to ensure continuity of approach to the marina application process nationally.
Phil Spencer, Commercial Manager
Phil is a Chartered Surveyor who has worked in the estate and property departments of BW for many years, most recently as an Estate Manager and also Head of Estate Management for the organisation. He has considerable experience of specialist waterway related issues including marinas and other types of pleasure craft bases.
Phil will work with other departments to manage the legal and property aspects of the marina application process.
Carl West, Technical Manager
Carl is a Chartered Engineer and has worked within the field of civil engineering for over 20 years. He has worked for BW for several years, as a project engineer, programme manager and, most recently, within the Internal Audit department. Prior to joining BW, he worked for a local authority design and construction unit involved in bridge design and project management and as a consultant within the construction industry.
Carl will work with other departments to manage the technical aspects of the marina application process.
Gareth Savage, Projects Manager
Gareth is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 10 years experience. He has worked for BW for several years, initially in project and contract management and then as an Senior Engineer leading a team undertaking a variety of projects, inspecting canal assets and providing general engineering support. Before joining BW, he worked on site for a major national contractor delivering road, rail, water and land remediation projects.
Gareth will work with other departments to manage water resource aspects of the marina application process.
